Chattanooga District Senior Olympics Torch Relay and Opening Ceremony

Chattanooga’s Senior Olympians and community leaders will carry the Senior Olympics torch through downtown Chattanooga on Monday, May 2. The relay will start at Alexian Brothers Senior Neighbors (250 E. 10th Street) at 11 a.m. and end at the First Tennessee Pavilion (1801 Carter Street) to kick off the Opening Ceremony at 12 p.m. For more information, call (423) 755-6131.

Chattanooga District Senior Olympic Games

Watch the Tennessee Valley’s senior Olympians compete in 55 different events across the Chattanooga area May 2 through 11. For a schedule of events visit www.AlexianBrothers.net.

Social Security Workshop

Alexian Brothers Senior Ministries will host workshop on Social Security benefits on Thursday, May 5 at 10:30 a.m. at Alexian Brothers Senior Neighbors Soddy-Daisy Senior Center, located at 190 Depot Street in Soddy-Daisy. Soddy-Daisy Mayor to Speak on the Older Americans Act

Alexian Brothers Senior Ministries will host Soddy- Daisy Mayor, James Adams on Friday, May 6 at 11:30am at Alexian Brothers Senior Neighbors Soddy-Daisy Senior Center, located at 190 Depot Street in Soddy-Daisy. Live Oldies Music and Dance

Alexian Brothers Senior Ministries will host an Oldies dance on Friday, May 6 at 6 p.m. at the Alexian Brothers Senior Neighbors Soddy-Daisy Senior Center, located at 190 Depot Street in Soddy-Daisy. Free “Relieving Back Pain” Lunch and Learn

Alexian Brothers Senior Ministries will host a lunch and learn on tips to relieve back pain with holistic techniques on Tuesday, May 10 at 11 a.m. at Alexian Brothers Senior Neighbors, located at 250 E. 10th Street in Chattanooga. Call (423) 755-6131 by May 3 to RSVP.

Alexian Village Open House and “Income Tax Saving Strategies” Workshop

Alexian Brothers Senior Ministries will host an “Income Tax Saving Strategies” workshop and open house with Kim Lawrence, CPA, of Decosimo Certified Public Accountants, at Alexian Village on Wednesday, May 11 at 12 p.m. Alexian Village is located at 437 Alexian Way on Signal Mountain. Macular Degeneration Workshop

Alexian Brothers Senior Ministries will host a workshop on macular degeneration with Dr. John Stone on Wednesday, May 11 at 7 p.m. at Alexian Village, located at 437 Alexian Way on Signal Mountain.

Alexian Brothers Senior Neighbors Soddy-Daisy Center Health Fair

Alexian Brothers Senior Ministries will hold a senior health fair on Thursday, May 12 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Alexian Brothers Senior Neighbors Soddy-Daisy Senior Center, located at 190 Depot Street in Soddy-Daisy. Admission is free. Call (423) 332-1702 for more information.

Ballroom Dance Party

Alexian Brothers Senior Ministries hosts a Ballroom Dance Party on the second Thursday of each month (May 12) at 7 p.m. in the Alexian Village Town Hall. Alexian Village is located at 437 Alexian Way on Signal Mountain. Call (423) 886-0571 for more information.

Scenic City Chorale Spring Concert

The Scenic City Chorale will present their spring concert titled, “A Musical Journey” on Friday, May 13 at 7:30 p.m. in the Brainerd Baptist Church sanctuary. The performance will include sacred songs, spirituals, river songs and show tunes. There will be no admission charge. Brainerd Baptist Church is located at 300 Brookfield Avenue in Chattanooga.

The 65-member group is comprised entirely of volunteers. Membership is drawn from the Chattanooga area, as well as Alabama and Georgia. The Scenic City Chorale rehearses on Tuesday mornings at 10 a.m. at the Alexian Brothers Senior Neighbors building at 250 E. 10th Street in downtown Chattanooga. “Sandwich Generation” Caregiver Support Group Meeting

Palliative Care Services, a subsidiary of Hospice of Chattanooga, and Alexian Brothers Senior Ministries offer a “Sandwich Generation” Caregiver Support Group meeting on the third Tuesday of each month (May 17) from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Alexian Brothers Valley Residence, located at 1164 Mountain Creek Road in Red Bank. Call (423) 875-6110 to RSVP. A light lunch and respite care during the meeting will be provided.

Chattanooga Dulcimer Concert

Alexian Brothers Senior Ministries will host a concert from the Chattanooga Dulcimers on Thursday, May 19 at 11 a.m. at the Alexian Brothers Senior Neighbors Soddy-Daisy Senior Center, located at 190 Depot Street in Soddy-Daisy. Senior Arts Council Concert

The Senior Arts Council will host a free concert at the Bessie Smith Atrium on Thursday, May 19 at 1:30 p.m. The free concert will feature Ed Huey on acoustic guitar and harmonica, the Ben Friberg Trio, keyboardist Eddie Hixson, and vocalist Johnnie Sue. Staying Active Workshop

Alexian Brothers Senior Ministries will host a workshop on the benefits of staying active with Beth Herring, Physical Therapist and Director of Outpatient Therapy of Alexian Village Health and Rehabilitation Center, on Thursday, May 19 at 7 p.m. at Alexian Village, located at 437 Alexian Way on Signal Mountain.

Stroke Prevention Workshop

Alexian Brothers Senior Ministries will host a workshop on stroke prevention with Dr. Thomas Devlin of the Erlanger Neurology Group, on Tuesday, May 24 at 2 p.m. at Alexian Village, located at 437 Alexian Way on Signal Mountain.

Book Club

Alexian Brothers Senior Ministries hosts a book club on the fourth Wednesday of each month (May 25) at 1 p.m. at Alexian Brothers Senior Neighbors, located at 250 E. 10th Street in Chattanooga. Prescription Medicine Workshop

Alexian Brothers Senior Ministries will host a free workshop on the topic of prescription medicines with Jill Heine, Health Educator with the Hamilton County Health Department, on Thursday, May 26 at 10:30 a.m. at the Alexian Brothers Senior Neighbors Soddy-Daisy Senior Center, located at 190 Depot Street in Soddy-Daisy. Men’s Luncheon

Alexian Brothers Senior Ministries hosts a Men’s Luncheon on the last Tuesday of each month (May 31) at 12 p.m. at Alexian Brothers Senior Neighbors, located at 250 East 10th Street in Chattanooga. The cost of the luncheon is $8. Please call (423) 755-6131 by May 24 to RSVP.  

Nashville Trip

Alexian Brothers Senior Ministries will host a two day trip to Nashville on May 24 and 25. The trip includes the Grand Old Opry, a tour of the city and the Capitol and much more. Biloxi Trip

Alexian Brothers Senior Ministries will host a five day/four night trip to Biloxi, Mississippi on July 25 through 29. The trip includes motor coach transportation, lodging at a Casino Hotel, eight meals, a guided tour of St. Louis and a day trip to New Orleans. Cost is $379 per person for a double room. Mount Rushmore Trip

Alexian Brothers Senior Ministries will host a nine day, eight night trip to Mount Rushmore on September 24 through October 2. The trip includes a guided tour of Deadwood, gaming at a Deadwood Casino, a visit to the Mount Rushmore National Memorial, and more. A two-person room is $699 per person. Cruise Alaska

Alexian Brothers Senior Ministries will host an Alaskan cruise with Princess Cruise Lines in fall 2011. The ship leaves port August 24 for eleven days and ten nights. The trip includes two nights in Denali and one on Mt. McKinley. Call (423) 332-1702 for more information.

Cruise Hawaii

Alexian Brothers Senior Ministries will host a ten day, nine night trip to Hawaii with Norwegian Cruise Lines in October 2011. Call (423) 332-1702 for more information.

Computer Classes for Seniors

Alexian Brothers Senior Ministries offers several levels of computer classes for seniors at their Alexian Brothers Senior Neighbors location at 250 E. 10th Street in Chattanooga. Beginning level, “Generations on Line,” classes are free and are offered in both English and Spanish. Level two classes are $25 per 8-hour session and are offered the third and fourth Mondays and Tuesdays of each month from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Seating is limited. Senior Leadership Academy Now Accepting Applications

Alexian Brothers Senior Neighbors’ Senior Leadership Academy is now accepting applications for the 2011-2012 class. Coordinated through Senior Neighbors Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP), the Senior Leadership Academy is designed to cultivate the skills and enthusiasm of adults over 50 years of age and help them develop into more effective community leaders. Line Dance Classes

Alexian Brothers Senior Ministries offers beginners line dance classes each Monday and Wednesday at 9 a.m. and intermediate/advanced line dance classes each Monday and Wednesday at 10 a.m. Alexian Brothers Senior Neighbors Soddy-Daisy Senior Center, located at 190 Depot Street. Free T’ai Ji Classes

Alexian Brothers Senior Ministries offers free T’ai Ji classes to all ages of adults each Thursday from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Alexian Brothers Senior Neighbors, located at 250 East 10th Street in Chattanooga. This fun and educational class taught by Chris Campbell of Time for T’ai Ji, will focus on muscle strengthening exercises for the legs along with coordination exercises that will help participants improve their posture and balance. Ballroom Dance Lessons

Alexian Brothers Senior Ministries offers intermediate ballroom dance classes each Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the Alexian Brothers Senior Neighbors, located at 250 East 10th Street in Chattanooga. Class registration and tuition is required. Call (423) 755-6131 for more information.

Beginning Yoga Classes

Alexian Brothers Senior Ministries offers beginning Yoga each Wednesday from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Alexian Brothers Senior Neighbors, located at 250 East 10th Street in Chattanooga. The cost is $25 for an 8-week session ($20 for Alexian Brothers Senior Neighbors members.) The class is taught by a certified Yoga instructor. Attendees should bring their own yoga mat.
