Sharing the Arts with Seniors: The Senior Arts Council to Celebrate its First Anniversary
To celebrate its first anniversary, the Senior Arts Council is hosting an event at Loose Cannon Gallery, 1800A Rossville Avenue in the Main Street area on Allied Arts Day, Tuesday, February 22 at 1:30 pm. Musicians Matt Evans and Christie Burns of the Folk School of Chattanooga will play the fiddle, banjo, and hammer dulcimer and Rebekah and Kofi Mawuko of Mawre & Co will perform African drumming and dance. Ellen Heavilon of the Hart Gallery will discuss the revitalized Main Street area and its public art, renovated buildings, galleries and stores. Light refreshments will be provided. This event is free and open to the public. The Senior Arts Council promotes various art forms – music, dance, theater, literature and visual – for the cultural, educational, and social enrichment of Chattanooga’s senior community. Begun as a project of the Alexian Brothers Senior Neighbors Leadership Academy Class of 2009-2010, the Senior Arts Council focuses their efforts on serving a full spectrum of the senior population. The Senior Arts Council offers seniors access to artistic, cultural and enrichment opportunities – by hosting events in the community and taking seniors to artistic venues. At least once a month during the past year, Senior Arts Council has exposed seniors to the arts. Most recently, Senior Arts Council facilitated the attendance of seniors at a chamber music concert, part of The String Theory series at the Hunter Museum. Prior to the concert, SAC invitees toured the museum. Lee University provided transportation and tickets through its representatives Darlia Conn and Gloria Chien. Seniors have also attended performances at the Chattanooga Theatre Centre, thanks to Producing Director George Quick. Senior Arts Council members are: Joan Hamner, Bennie Haynes, Lillie Herkley, Karl Kendrick, Sandra Ledford, Jewel McSpadden, Virginia Vollmer, and Harvey Weiss. Ed Huey is an honorary member and has graciously performed a number of times at different senior venues. Other artists who have contributed during the past year are Christie Burns, Lorene Collier, Lolly Durant, Vicki Hayes Hardesty, Frances McDonald, Mamie Owens and Chuck Tuttle. The Senior Arts Council is supported in part by Allied Arts and Alexian Brothers Senior Ministries.
