Hospice of Chattanooga Hosts Fifth Annual Golf Tournament

Hospice of Chattanooga will hold its fifth annual golf tournament Monday, May 17th, at the Lookout Mountain Golf Club.  This year’s tournament will honor the late Lew Oehmig, a legendary Chattanooga golfer known throughout the United States for his success on the golf course.  As in years past, all tournament proceeds will benefit The Hospice of Chattanooga Foundation, which provides more than half a million dollars in non-reimbursed hospice care each year.

Hospice of Chattanooga and its outstanding end of life care remains close to the Oehmig family’s hearts.  The organization cared for Lew Oehmig before his death in 2002.  “Hospice was there all the way, every day, as my father was dying,” said King Oehmig, son of Lew.  “The comfort, care and medical expertise that the entire Hospice of Chattanooga staff brought to our home those few weeks was truly amazing, and we will be forever grateful.”

Over the span of five decades, Lew Oehmig’s golf victories included winning the United States Golf Association’s Senior Amateur three times, the Tennessee Senior Amateur seven times, and the Tennessee State Amateur eight times. Lew Oehmig served as the 1977 Captain of the United States Walker Cup Team and was presented the Bob Jones Award in 1994, the highest honor given by the United States Golf Association in recognition of distinguished sportsmanship in golf.
“It is our mission at Hospice of Chattanooga to see that no one reaches the end of life alone, afraid, or in pain,” said Rev. Clark Taylor, Jr., C.E.O. of Hospice of Chattanooga.  “The funds raised through this tournament help us ensure we can continue meeting our mission.  We are so grateful to the Oehmig family and the community for supporting our organization.”

A total of 160 players have been accepted into the golf tournament.  Each four person team’s entry fee will include food and beverages, 18 holes of select shot golf, tee gifts from Titleist/FootJoy and awards for the winning teams.  There will be a morning start at 8:00 a.m. and an afternoon start at 1:30 p.m.
