Alexian Brothers Senior Ministries to Help Seniors Stay Safe on the Road with Driving Class at Senior Neighbors Thursday, January 21

Senior Neighbors, an Alexian Brothers ministry, is scheduled to host an AARP refresher course on driver safety in an effort to encourage seniors to stay safe on the road. The class will be held Thursday, January 21, 2010 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Alexian Brothers Senior Neighbors building at 1000 Newby Street (corner of 10^th and Houston streets) in downtown Chattanooga. The AARP Driver Safety Program is the nation's first and largest refresher course of its kind. The course will cover a variety of important topics, including how seniors can enhance their driving skills and update their knowledge on current rules of the road. Attendees will learn how they can reduce their risks of receiving traffic violations, crashes and chances for injuries. Senior drivers going through normal age-related physical changes will learn how to adjust their driving to help keep them safe. Many insurance companies offer a discount to those who complete the course. Course participants should check with their insurance company to learn if a discount is available.

Senior Neighbors welcomes all interested seniors, age 50 and older, to sign up for this upcoming class. Attendees are asked to bring a bag lunch. The cost to attend is $12 for AARP members and $14 for nonmembers. To register call (423) 755-6100.

Senior Neighbors was founded nearly 50 years ago in Chattanooga by Ginny Power. Designed to help seniors in our area age successfully, Senior Neighbors provides vocational, social, mental, spiritual and physical opportunities for seniors at four community centers. Membership to Senior Neighbors is just $25 a year and includes the following programs and events:     

• 3 Senior Centers in downtown Chattanooga and 1 in Soddy Daisy with activities Monday through Friday of each week
• The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) which places senior volunteers with non-profit agencies in the Chattanooga area
• The Chattanooga District Senior Olympics  
• The Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP) which places qualifying older adults in paid temporary community service positions with local non-profit agencies and government organizations 
• Scenic City Chorale and Senior Neighbors Orchestra
• Computer, art, Bible, foreign language, dance and tai chi classes
• Monthly men’s luncheon featuring a different speaker each month
• Day and overnight bus trips

• The Prime Timers Career Expo – an annual career fair and workshop expo exclusively for seniors
