UTC ElderScholars Meeting To Be Held January 12

The January ElderScholars meeting will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 12 at 1 p.m. in the Lookout Mountain Room of the University Center.

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga offers senior citizens in the Chattanooga area a unique opportunity to enhance the quality of life through participation in mind-stimulating academic, social, and cultural activities within a university environment. This group meets the second Tuesday of every month at 1:30 p.m. in the University Center, Signal Mountain Room, to hear presentations on a variety of topics.

The scheduled speaker is George Davenport. He is Chattanooga born and raised along with a background that includes graduation from Notre Dame High School followed by graduation from West Point in 1963. He also has received his Master’s degree from the University of Wisconsin in Environmental Studies.

Mr. Davenport served in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Germany and Viet Nam. That early career was followed by 32 years as a Project Manager for Proctor and Gamble. He has lived in Europe, Asia and several states in the United States during his working years. He has also participated in Elderhostel (now called Exploritas) with emphasis on subjects as diverse as Abraham Lincoln, the History of the Shakers, and the Battle of Gettysburg. He recently retired and returned to Chattanooga two years ago.

The presentation in January will continue from an earlier focus in September on nuclear power as an energy source to nuclear energy as a source of weaponry. Mr. Davenport will share information about the Manhattan Project, a topic he has been exploring in depth.
