Erlanger and Chattanooga State host “A Slight Discomfort”
Chattanooga, Tenn. – Erlanger Health System and Chattanooga State Community College are proud to announce the presentation of “A Slight Discomfort,” a man’s journey through prostate cancer, at C.C. Bond Humanities Auditorium on Thursday, September 8, beginning at 7 p.m. One out of six men is currently diagnosed with prostate cancer. Behind lung cancer, prostate is the second leading cause of death among American men. The good news is there is hope of winning the fight and increasing survival rates with education and early detection. “A Slight Discomfort” is a candid presentation of a one-man play written by award-winning playwright, Jeff Metcalf, who based the play on his journey from diagnosis to surviving prostate cancer, and performed by actor, Paul Kiernan. “I have kept journals for most of my adult life,” wrote Metcalf, a professor of English at the University of Utah. “During my journey into the world of prostate cancer, I made careful notes of my experiences. In part, the exercise kept me entertained. I could keep a distance of sorts. I’d write down snippets of conversations that struck me as humorous and made notes about the madness of trying to negotiate my way through the medical system. I was, to some degree, trying to transform the disease into a shape I could understand.” The play has received positive reviews from across the nation and around the world. Medical professionals, patients, survivors, family members and friends rave about the informative and yet very humorous and frank writings of Metcalf. According to the play’s official website, www.aslightdiscomfort.com, “[The play] is about living…. Its universal themes and appeal are not limited to men…It explores the shared experience of being human and dealing with a crisis with grace and humor….It takes the audience from laughter to tears, from blushing to bravo, from thought to action, from tragedy to triumph.” This free event will feature heavy hors d’oeuvres and health information before the play. Doors to the C.C. Bond Humanities Auditorium at Chattanooga State will open at 6 p.m. The play will take place from 7 until 8:30 p.m. Reservations are required.
